POKOTABI / Tokyo Shellfish
東京シェルフィッシュ
At Tokyo Shellfish in Omori Sanno, guests can enjoy a relaxed seafood evening centered on clam-steeped oden, raw oysters, white wine-steamed shellfish, and coin-operated drink dispensers.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Step past the entrance noren curtain at Tokyo Shellfish, a tavern centered on the rich umami of shellfish, and you are welcomed by an atmosphere steeped in nostalgic Showa-era charm. Arranged with approachable table and counter seating, the space is well suited for friendly group toasts as well as a relaxed solo stop into the evening.
The signature dish to order first is the shellfish-broth oden, simmered in a stock deeply infused with shellfish dashi. Alongside shellfish such as clams, oysters, and whelk, items like daikon radish that soak up the broth, minced shrimp dumplings (ebi shinjo), and Japanese beef tendon each contribute layered depth to the simmered pot. The clear soup itself has enough savory complexity to serve as an accompaniment to drinks, making an assorted oden plate an appealing first course to savor slowly.
Beyond oden, the kitchen offers dishes that present the character of shellfish directly, including comparative tastings of fresh raw oysters and platters of raw shellfish sashimi. Rising with ocean aromas and concentrated cooking juices, the white wine-steamed mixed shellfish with aosa sea lettuce is a house specialty that enlivens the table. Slowly simmered rice dishes served in earthenware pots, such as oyster and bamboo shoot rice or sea urchin and crab finished with butter, extend the shellfish and seafood flavors through to the end of the meal.
A distinctive feature of the dining room is its self-service drink setup, where diners insert coins to pour sake and shochu or select their favorite mixers from manual dispensers. The broader drink selection includes house cocktails named after Showa-era pop idols, Japanese gins, and Sapporo Akaboshi red-star lager, giving guests the flexibility to mix glasses to their preferred strength and flavor. Because seats frequently fill up by evening, booking a dinner reservation in advance is recommended if you plan to settle in for hot shellfish oden and self-poured drinks.
